Chapter Fourteen

Kaenan

Last night Berkeley and I took my momma out to dinner and then dropped her off at the airport to say our goodbyes while Isla unpacked and settled in. It tore me up to see Berkeley cry and grip onto my momma like a lifeline.

My daughter has had to say too many goodbyes in her short life.

Her mother who vanished from her life.

Her grandmother and aunt when I picked her up at Mia’s funeral.

And now my mother, who Berkeley bonded with instantly the moment we left the funeral. Berkeley didn’t leave her side that whole first week.

Getting comfortable with me took longer.

I know I’m not the most inviting looking guy on the planet. I’m told that regularly too, but it has me wondering if Mia ever had a boyfriend or any male role models around for Berkeley.

Since Berkeley took a minute to warm up to me, I’m lucky that my mother and Berkeley had an instant connection in order to make the transition for Berkeley a little smoother.

Something wakes me out of my deep sleep. Then I hear the sound from the kitchen that you never want to hear at five am when everyone under your roof is asleep.

“Front Door Open.”

I sit up in bed faster than I have in my entire life and grabbed for the baby monitor. Berkeley is still sound asleep.

I walk to my window and peak outside and see Isla jogging in place down on the sidewalk by her car, with her watch up to her face as she clicks on it, probably bringing up a running app or something.

There’s a lot about Isla that doesn’t quite make sense, running half marathons adds to that list. Not that she doesn’t have a great body… she does. It just has me wondering what other things I don’t know about the beautiful blonde sleeping on the other side of the wall from me.

She didn’t say that she runs in the dark. It’s still pitch black outside now that it’s past daylight savings.

I reach for my phone on the nightstand and draft up a quick text asking where she’s headed and when she’ll be back… just in case, but I hear the chime of her phone coming from her room. It’s a faint sound between the walls but I still hear it.

Leaving her phone in her room is becoming a theme with this woman and I don’t like that she’s without it.

I can't sleep knowing that she's out there running alone without a way to call for help if she needs it. When she said that she’s training, I assumed that meant she runs on a treadmill at the gym not running in the dark with no way to defend herself.

Five am is earlier than I usually get up but there's no way I'll go back to sleep with her out there. I head to my bathroom to take a shower and get ready for the day before Berkeley wakes.
